Sky and Sea in Paint and Poetry

Artist: Arlene Williams (artist) & Tony Steven Williams (poet)

Sky and sea! Those vital glorious immensities that interact with humankind, and which are so important to our planet and to us all.

Arlene, a versatile and explorative artist, utilises acrylic, watercolour, gouache, oil and mixed media in diverse ways to present sky and sea scenes in various moods and dispositions: their beauty, their dangers. Tony responds to each painting with a poem, either as a direct ekphrastic response to the scene or as a sideways reaction triggered by the scene.

Each work in this exhibition is designed as a melding of brush and words for the viewer to enjoy and engage with – a visual and contemplative experience.

Arlene Williams is an award-winning Canberra artist whose paintings hang in private local, interstate and overseas collections. A Bachelor of Visual Arts graduate of the ANU School of Art, she has successfully exhibited for many years producing paintings in a variety of styles, media and subject matter. A versatile artist, Arlene creates both realistic and interpretative images of landforms, figures, architecture, still life and wildlife. She paints across most of the main media, and her works range from miniature to large.

Tony Steven Williams is a Canberra poet and short-fiction author with many publications in journals, anthologies and magazines. Tony’s output is intentionally diverse both in form and material. His work ranges from dark to fun, and he considers this a reflection of our rollercoaster lives. The environment and the human condition are particularly important to him. Tony has two published collections: Sun and Moon, Light and Dark (2018, Ginninderra Press) and Reimmersion (2023, Ginninderra Press).
