Hypergum & Landscapes

Artist: Cameron Plum

“Artistically, I’ve always been driven by a passion for creative expression. Growing up in the remote rural town of Khancoban, NSW, surrounded by picturesque mountains, rolling fields and foliage instilled in me a visceral love and admiration for nature. My aim is to relay that to you the viewer.

After studying art, photography, and design, I began my career as a graphic designer in Melbourne. After moving to Canberra, and after several jobs, I’m now reigniting my artistic spark, capturing Australia’s natural beauty through vibrant acrylic paintings on canvas.

I find inspiration through exploration, sketches, and photography of the local landscape, which guides my creative direction. I usually work on several themes concurrently.

‘Hypergum & Landscapes’ aims to share my passion for nature and its organic forms by reimagining them in bold, unnatural colours. This vibrant palette not only adds visual appeal but also invites the viewer to experience the natural world from a fresh perspective, challenging their perceptions and sparking curiosity.

Rather than simply reproducing accurate representations of local natural images, I want to evoke emotion and interest through vibrant colours and bold compositions. By doing so, I hope to create a body of work that not only showcases the beauty of nature but also redefines it, encouraging viewers to see the world with new eyes.

I aim to achieve this with the exploration of several themes:

My ‘Hypergum’ series is an exploration of the Australian gum tree, presented in a way that challenges the viewer’s expectations. By flattening the image into a nearly two-dimensional format, I create a decorative, patterned effect that encourages the viewer to reconsider their perception of this iconic Australian symbol.

With the“Sunset Study” theme, by combining natural hues with unexpected colours, I’m creating atmospheric visuals that capture the mystery and intrigue of the landscape under subtle lighting conditions. This approach allows me to explore the interplay between light and shadow, texture and tone, resulting in immersive and thought-provoking pieces that call on the viewer to form their own interpretation of what might be hidden in the light and shadow.

The ‘Mountain Reverie’ series is a collection of artworks that delve into the breathtaking, layered beauty of mountains. Specifically, the series highlights the stunning views of the Brindabella Ranges near Canberra. By capturing the essence of these vistas from carefully chosen vantage points, the series immerses viewers in the natural beauty of the region.”
