CONTEMPLAR
Artist: Rodrigo Perez Zamora
Born in El Salvador and calling Canberra home, Rodrigo creates abstract pieces with bold pops of colour and sharp lines, using acrylic and gouache on paper. His work blends influences from El Salvador's 'artesanias' with a fun, eclectic mix of figurative forms, portraits, and collages. Each painting is a reflection of his Latin-American roots, the places he's traveled, the people he's encountered, and moments that have shaped him. They're vivid, expressive, and full of life.
As a first gen migrant and artist, it's important for him to share his story. It's about helping other migrants see their own stories and potential in a new light.
Among his most notable works are his depictions of Our Lady of Guadalupe, where he brings a fresh, contemporary feel to a deeply rooted cultural and spiritual symbol. These works reflect his personal connection to his heritage and faith, turning traditional subjects into something modern, vibrant, and contemplative.
CONTEMPLAR
Contemplar, which translates to 'contemplate' in Spanish is an invitation to pause and reflect.
This collection represents a year spent in introspection, where every piece captures the power of looking inward. It's about moments of stillness, growth, and the strength found in embracing one's path.
These vibrant, playful pieces are moments of restoration. Rodrigo describes them, as a 'pilgrimage back home', a place where head and heart align in harmony.
With Contemplar, Rodrigo offers a space for viewers to connect with themselves, to see each piece as a mirror for their own thoughts and emotions. Through these works, he invites you to reflect on your own path, explore the synchronicity between mind and spirit, and to find meaning in the simple act of being present.
